Choosing a Barcode Label

Being able to walk up to any piece of equipment, location or inventory item and quickly scan it is a huge step forward in workflow productivity and data accuracy. But first the barcodes need get attached to those items, and they need to be easy to create and scan.

We've worked to build a solution that allows you to generate and print your own barcodes using your existing laser printer onto durable, scuff and temperature resistant labels. The labels are made by Avery and are very affordable from various retailers such as Amazon, OfficeMax, Walmart, Avery.com and more.

TheWorxHub barcode app supports 3 different barcode labels sizes, each with different benefits. Let's take a quick look at each type:

Avery 6578

  • 2"h x 2-5/8"w
  • 15 labels / sheet
  • 750 / pack
  • Around $0.06 / label

At about ¾ the size of a credit card, this is our largest label and by far the best one for labelling back-office equipment where you're not too worried about appearance. Because of its size it's easier to scan from distance or in poor light situations. If you have the space to place this label, this is the most user-friendly choice.

Avery 6577

  • 5/8"h x 3"w
  • 32 labels / sheet
  • 1600 / pack
  • Around $0.03 / label

This long and narrow label is great for placing in discrete locations. Label door jambs, the edge of an oven door, furniture, inventory shelves and anywhere space is tight. Being a smaller label, your scanning target is shrunk so having a modern device camera with auto-focus features can help when lighting is poor.

Avery 6576

  • 1-1/4"h x 1-3/4"w
  • 32 labels / sheet
  • 1600 / pack
  • Around $0.03 / label

Like the 6577 label, this small label is great for placing in discrete locations. Because of its narrow width, this label can work on some curved surfaces like chair or table legs or where you don't have room for the longer 6577 label. Being a smaller label, your scanning target is shrunk so having a modern device camera with auto-focus features can help when lighting is poor.

3 More Options

Each of the labels mentioned above require a laser printer. If you only have a deskjet printer, there are nearly identical labels available in a less durable format. If temperature or moisture are not a concern you can also look at Avery 6571, Avery 6572 and Avery 6570.
